If you’re designing heating for livestock, you’re probably staring at two options: ceramic emitters or quartz infrared lamps. Most people lean toward ceramic because they feel like tanks—they’re rugged and hard to break. But honestly? They’re a bit sluggish. We’ve found that quartz infrared is usually the better bet for the long haul, especially when you look at the actual cost of running the thing.
The heat factor
Here is the thing about ceramic heaters: they’re slow. They spend a lot of time just trying to warm themselves up, and a ton of that heat just vanishes into the air before it ever reaches the animal. Quartz is a different story. It uses a tungsten filament inside high-purity glass to shoot infrared heat in a straight line. It hits the animal instantly. Because the heat goes exactly where it’s supposed to, you can actually drop the wattage and still keep the animals warm. That’s a huge win for the barn’s electrical bill.
The “Oops” Factor
Now, let’s talk about the downside. Glass breaks. If a heavy object slams into a quartz tube or someone sprays it with cold water while it’s glowing hot, it’s gone. Ceramic doesn’t have that problem, though they can still crack if the temperature swings too wildly. The fix is simple: just build a solid cage or guard around the tubes. Once they’re protected from the animals, the fragility isn’t really an issue anymore.

Nobody likes spending their weekend replacing bulbs. But quartz lamps give you a more consistent heat footprint and last for thousands of hours. And here is the best part: if you pair them with a decent dimming controller, you can dial in the temperature exactly how you want it. Ceramic is pretty much just “on” or “off,” which is frustrating when you’re trying to be precise.
