
Getting Infrared Heating Right for Wide-Format Low-E Glass
If you’re preheating wide-format Low-E glass, you know the struggle. You need the heat to be exactly the same from one edge of the sheet to the other. But once you hit glass widths over 3 meters, standard lamps just don’t cut it. You end up with cold spots, and that’s where the trouble starts. We fix this by building continuous infrared units specifically for these extreme lengths.
The headache of 3-meter+ zones
You can’t just stretch a filament and call it a day. If you do, you’ll run into voltage drop. Basically, the center of the tube starts running cooler than the ends, and your thermal profile goes out the window. To stop that from happening, we tweak the wattage and voltage. We make sure the heat density stays flat across the entire 3000mm+ span. We also use high-grade quartz glass. Why? Because long tubes love to bow under their own weight. If they sag, they break. Simple as that.
Making it fit your shop
We don’t do “one size fits all.” We build these units to fit the actual footprint of your oven. Depending on how deep you need the heat to soak into the glass, you can go with shortwave or medium-wave emitters. For Low-E jobs, we often add special coatings. This shifts the emission spectrum so the energy actually hits the glass instead of baking your conveyor rollers. One quick tip: don’t skimp on the wiring. You’ll need heavy-duty connectors to handle the current. We use reinforced terminals because, in a 24/7 production line, things expand and contract. Cheap terminals loosen up. Ours don’t.
The trade-offs you should know about
Here’s the honest part. Pushing that much heat across 3 meters puts a massive load on your power supply. If you go for a high-wattage array, make sure your control cabinet has enough headroom to handle that initial surge of power when it kicks on. And a word of caution for the maintenance crew: these long tubes are fragile. One wrong move or a clumsy bump during a replacement and that quartz will crack. It takes a steady hand and some decent bracing to get them in safely.
