When you’re picking out an infrared lamp for the bathroom, your first instinct might be to just grab the most powerful one on the shelf. But here’s the thing: more isn’t always better. It’s really all about the size of the room. If you get the balance wrong, you’re either wasting electricity or shivering in a cold spot.
Matching the Power to the Space
Think about the actual volume of the room. If you’ve got a tiny powder room—something under 4m²—stick with a lower wattage, maybe 250W to 400W. If you go too high in a small space, the room turns into a sauna in seconds. Your thermostat will just keep clicking on and off, which is annoying and inefficient. For those bigger bathrooms (around 6m² to 10m²), you’ll want to jump up to 600W or 800W. You need that extra punch to actually reach the floor and walls. Plus, if you under-power a big room, the lamp just runs forever without ever getting the place warm. That’s a great way to burn out your filament way sooner than it should.
Don’t Forget the IP55 Rating
This is the “safety first” part. Bathrooms are humid. You’ve got steam, splashes, and moisture everywhere. That’s why you need an IP55 rating. It basically means the unit is sealed tight against dust and water jets. We make sure the connections are locked down so steam doesn’t condense on the terminals. Without that seal, you’re looking at corrosion or, worse, electrical faults. Not exactly the vibe you want while taking a shower.
The Balancing Act
There is a bit of a trade-off with high-wattage lamps. They heat up instantly, which feels great, but they create a very intense “hot spot” right underneath the light. This is where your ceiling height comes into play. If you mount an 800W lamp too low, it’s going to feel like you’re standing under a heat gun. Too high? The heat vanishes before it even hits you.
