
Dealing with the Headache of Wide-Format Low-E Glass Preheating
If you’re working with Low-E glass and your surfaces are wider than 3 meters, you know the struggle. Trying to get a uniform heat across that much space is a nightmare. Most off-the-shelf infrared lamps just aren’t built for this. You end up with these annoying cold spots, or you’re forced to jam a dozen different lamps together. That doesn’t just make the machine bulky; it makes the whole setup a mess. We decided to stop fighting the hardware and just build the units specifically for these wide-format tunnels.
The 3-Meter Hurdle
You can’t just stretch a quartz tube and call it a day. That’s not how physics works. When you go that long, you run into voltage drops and thermal expansion. If you don’t get the filament and voltage exactly right, you get the “end-effect”—where the middle of the lamp is screaming hot but the ends are barely lukewarm. That’s a disaster for your coating. If the heat isn’t even, the coating won’t stick. Period.
What’s Under the Hood
We use high-purity quartz to house the tungsten filament. But for Low-E work, we go a step further. We often add specific coatings to the tube to shift the emission spectrum. Why? Because we want the heat to actually sink into the glass, not just warm up the air around it. And let’s talk about the wiring. We’ve all seen those flimsy clips that snap the moment you look at them. We hate those. Instead, we use reinforced terminals that can actually handle the stress of installation and the constant heating and cooling cycles. Whether your plant runs on 220V or 380V, we can make it work.
The Real-World Trade-offs
Here is the upside: your wiring becomes way simpler. Fewer power leads, fewer controllers, less clutter. It just feels cleaner. But look, there’s a catch. A 3-meter tube is basically a giant piece of glass. It’s fragile. If one tube cracks, that whole section is out of commission. To keep that from happening, we suggest putting them in reinforced cradles. It takes the mechanical stress off the glass. Also, make sure your cooling system is up to the task. These units put out a lot of heat, and you don’t want your furnace frame warping because you skimped on the fans.
