
How to pick the right wattage for your bathroom heater
When you’re looking at infrared lamps for a bathroom, it’s easy to just grab a bulb and call it a day. But it’s actually more about how much heat you need for the size of the room. Since bathrooms are basically steam rooms, we build these to IP65 standards. That’s just a fancy way of saying the seals are tight. It keeps the water out of the electronics so you don’t have to worry about short circuits while you’re showering.
Getting the power right
The wattage is what tells you how fast the room will actually feel warm. If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), keep it simple. A 250W to 400W lamp is plenty. Trust me, putting a 1000W heater in a tiny space is a mistake. You’ll end up with one blistering hot spot and a wasted electric bill. Not a great feeling. For the bigger bathrooms (6m² to 10m²), you’ll want more punch—usually 600W to 800W per lamp. Or, just use a few smaller ones. This spreads the warmth around so you aren’t freezing the moment you step away from the heater. If you go too low in a big room, the heat just vanishes before it ever reaches you.
The trade-off with high power
High wattage is great because it’s instant. You flip a switch, and it’s hot in seconds. But there’s a catch. More power means more pull on your electricity. You’ll want to double-check that your wiring and breakers can handle the load. Nobody likes a tripped breaker in the middle of a winter morning. We use quartz glass for the tubes because it can handle the stress of heating up and cooling down fast. But here’s a pro tip: be careful with them. Higher wattage makes the glass more sensitive.**Always hold the lamps by the ends.**The oils from your skin can create tiny hot spots on the glass, and that’s how they crack.
Where to put them
To get the most out of your heater, put it exactly where you’ll be standing. And whatever you do, don’t mount them right under your ventilation fan. The fan will just suck the heat away the second it’s created. When you get the wattage and the placement right, you can stop relying so much on the main house heating. Plus, it keeps the dampness away, which just makes the whole room feel fresher.
