
Stop Just Swapping Lamps: The Real Story Behind Glass Tempering
Changing a burnt-out infrared lamp is easy. Any maintenance tech can do it. But figuring out why that lamp died three months too early? That’s where the real work begins. In this business, it all comes down to getting that thermal soak just right and hitting the quench at the perfect moment. If your heat is off by even a few degrees across the sheet, you’re looking at optical distortion or, worse, a pile of broken glass.
The Trap of “More Power”
Most lines use shortwave IR lamps to push heat deep into the glass. Here is the thing: whenever we walk into a shop with cold spots, the first instinct is usually to just throw in higher-wattage lamps. Don’t do that. If you just crank up the kilowatts without checking your reflector alignment or the gap between the lamp and the glass, you’re just asking for trouble. You’ll end up with “hot spots” that bow the glass permanently. Plus, if you’re running 400V high-output tubes, your wiring and power supply have to be able to take that hit. Trying to fix poor lamp placement by overloading a circuit just fries your contacts faster. It’s a losing game.
What Actually Happens on the Floor
You can’t find the truth in a catalog. A PDF won’t tell you if your conveyor speed is fighting your lamp ramp-up. That’s why we prefer to get our hands dirty on-site. We want to map the thermal profile of your glass while it’s actually moving. We’re looking for the small stuff that adds up:
- Reflector oxidation (this is a silent killer for efficiency).
- Voltage drops that happen over those long cable runs.
- Tiny spacing errors that create uneven heat.
The Hidden Cost of Speed
High-density IR heating is great because it makes your cycles fast. But it’s brutal on your gear. Any heat that doesn’t make it into the glass ends up soaking into your machine frame and your electronics. If your cooling blowers aren’t actually built for the heat load you’re running, your lamps are going to keep popping every few months. It doesn’t matter which brand you buy. We aren’t just looking at the bulb. We’re looking at the whole system.
