
Dealing with Cold Spots in Weirdly Shaped Glassware
If you’ve ever worked with flasks, retorts, or custom lab gear, you know the headache of “cold spots.” You put your piece in a standard convection oven, thinking you’re good to go, but the air just can’t reach those tight curves or deep pockets. The result? Uneven stress. And we all know where that leads—the glass shatters, and you’re back to square one.
Why IR Actually Works
Here is the thing: air is lazy. It doesn’t like to go where it’s cramped. That’s why we use short-wave infrared (IR) lamps. Instead of relying on hot air to drift around, IR radiation moves in straight lines and hits the glass directly. To make sure we don’t miss a single spot, we set these lamps up in a multi-angle array. It basically wraps the heat around the glass from every direction, so those tricky geometries actually get the soak they need.
The Nitty-Gritty on Heat and Power
To get the glass to its annealing point quickly, you need a lot of punch in a small space. We usually go with quartz halogen tubes. They’re tough and won’t warp when things get scorching. When you’re pushing 2000W or more through one of these compact tubes, you get that intense heat density that makes the process move. But a word of warning:watch your voltage. If you plug a 230V lamp into a 400V line, it’ll pop almost instantly. On the flip side, if you under-volt it, your heat drops and your cycle times will start to crawl. It’s a balancing act.
Setting It Up (and the Trade-offs)
We use R7s or SK15 connectors. Why? Because they’re simple. If a lamp blows, your maintenance person can just swap it out and get back to work without having to rewire the entire rack. Just keep in mind that these high-density arrays put off a massive amount of ambient heat. If you cram too many lamps into a tight chamber just to kill off every last cold spot, your electronics are going to feel it. Your PLC and sensors can’t handle that kind of radiant blowback. Make sure you’ve got your cooling fans and heat sinks sorted, or you’ll be replacing your controllers a lot sooner than you’d like.
