How to pick the right infrared lamp for your bathroom
Nobody likes stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom. It’s a shock to the system. To fix that, we use shortwave infrared lamps. Unlike those old heaters that try to warm up all the damp air in the room, these hit you and your towel directly. It’s instant warmth.
Getting the wattage right
You can’t just grab any lamp and hope for the best. It all comes down to how much space you’re working with. If you’ve got a tiny powder room—maybe 3 to 5 square meters—a single 400W to 600W lamp usually does the trick. But for a big master bath (around 8-12m²), you’ll want a few lamps working together. We usually aim for a total of 800W to 1200W to make sure the whole space feels cozy. Here’s the thing: don’t just go for the biggest one you can find. If you overdo it, you’ll feel like you’re standing under a heat lamp at a buffet while the corners of the room stay ice cold. On the flip side, if you go too low, you’ll be dressed and gone before the room even feels warm.
The technical bits (and how to avoid headaches)
Most of these units plug into standard 220V-240V lines. But keep in mind that higher wattage means more power draw. Before you install a 3-lamp system, just double-check your circuit breaker and wire gauge. You don’t want to trip the power every time you take a shower. We use quartz glass and halogen-filled tubes because they can handle being turned on and off quickly without popping. One quick tip: high-wattage lamps are bright. Like, really bright. To keep from blinding yourself every morning, make sure you mount them at least 2.2 meters up.
Saving some cash on electricity
You don’t need the biggest lamp to get the best result. The real trick is pairing your lamp with a motion sensor or a timer. Since infrared heat is instant, there’s no need to leave the heater running for twenty minutes to “pre-heat” the room. You walk in, it warms you up, and it shuts off when you leave. Simple.
