
How to Pick the Right Infrared Wattage for Your Bathroom
When you’re picking out infrared heating lamps for a bathroom, your first instinct might be to just grab the most powerful one on the shelf. But here’s the thing: more power isn’t always better. If you go overboard, you’re just throwing money away on your electric bill. If you go too low? You’re still shivering when you step out of the shower. In a steamy bathroom, we use short-wave infrared. Why? Because it doesn’t waste time trying to warm up the humid air. It goes straight for you. It feels like a warm beam of sunlight hitting your skin.
Getting the Power Right
You’ve got to look at the actual size of the room. If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room—something under 4 square meters—a 250W to 400W lamp usually does the trick. But if you’re stepping up to a big master bath (around 6-10 square meters), you’ll probably want to jump to 600W or 800W. But be careful. If you put a massive heater in a tiny space, you get “hot spots.” You’ll feel like you’re being scorched in one spot while your back is still freezing. To avoid that, I usually suggest a few lower-wattage lamps spread across the ceiling. It creates a much more natural, even warmth.
The Waterproof Stuff
Since these are designed for wet areas, the heating element is tucked away inside a quartz glass tube. It keeps the moisture out so you don’t blow a fuse. Just keep in mind that this sealed housing traps some heat. If you cram a 1000W lamp into a tight, recessed ceiling spot with no airflow, you’re asking for trouble. You could melt the wiring or trip your breaker. Give the unit some room to breathe.
A Few Tips for the Install
Don’t just plug this into any old outlet. Give it its own dedicated circuit. Infrared lamps pull a lot of power the second you flip the switch. Also, use high-temperature cabling. Standard wires can degrade or melt over time when they’re this close to a heat source, and that’s a nightmare you don’t want. As for where to put them, aim for about 2.1 to 2.4 meters from the floor. If you mount them any higher, the heat just fades away before it ever reaches you.
